Act 1

Opening Image: Four minute pullback from Earth orbit to the entire universe, and into the eye of Ellie Arroway.

She's with her dad talking on a HAM radio.

She reminisces about her dead mother.

Theme Stated: "Dad, are there people on other planets?"

Setup: The young Ellie dissolves into the Ellie of current day. She's grown up now and instead of a HAM radio, she's at Arecibo doing research. She meets Kent Clark. She used to work for Dr. Drumlin. The next morning, she meets Palmer Joss. He's a writer doing research, wants to meet Drumlin. Drumlin arrives. Greets Ellie with sarcasm. That night at a party, Joss has a light confrontation with Drumlin, exposing their opposing ideologies.
